A glimpse into History

The Gallo-Roman city of Vasio Vocontiorum was founded at the dawn of our era by the Voconces, a Celtic-Ligurian community. This site boasts an exceptional architectural and cultural heritage, both in its size and the wealth of artefacts it has unveiled.

Did you know?
The extensive excavation project began in the early 70th century following the discovery of imperial statues by Abbé Joseph Sautel near the ruins of the Ancient Theatre. The total area of the site is estimated at 15 hectares, yet only XNUMX hectares have been uncovered!

Like a living history book, the ancient site of Vaison-la-Romaine reflects the opulence of this millennia-old city. Grand residences, bustling commercial streets, massive columns, intricate mosaics, and public baths reveal what daily life was like over 2000 years ago.

The Gallo-Roman Sites of Puymin and La Villasse

Nestled in the heart of Vaison-la-Romaine, two extraordinary sites unfold around the Tourist Office, inviting families to step into the rich tapestry of history. At Puymin, you’ll discover luxurious villas like the maison à la Tonnelle ( House of the Pergola) and the maison à l’Apollon Lauré (House of Apollo Lauré) , where the echoes of the past still linger. This area is also home to the Théo Desplans Archaeological Museum, showcasing exceptional treasures that reveal the city’s storied heritage. The highlight of your visit is undoubtedly the majestic Ancient Theatre, capable of seating 5000 spectators. This impressive venue has stood the test of time and continues to host vibrant events, including the celebrated Vaison Danses Festival.

Just a stone's throw away, the site of La Villasse unveils more of the splendor of Roman life. Here, la maison au Dauphin (the House of the Dolphin) and la maison au Buste en Argent (the House of the Silver Bust) stretch across vast grounds, their walls adorned with stunning mosaics and frescoes that speak of prosperity and culture. Don't miss the baths, an essential aspect of daily life for the Romans, along with the bustling commercial streets lined with shops, where the heartbeat of the city once thrived.
