The natural diversity of the Ventoux region

Mont Ventoux rises as a watchful guardian over Provence, its iconic silhouette visible from nearly every corner of the Vaucluse. Standing at an awe-inspiring 1910 metres, its summit is stark and barren, a striking contrast to the lush slopes below. The mountain’s beauty unfurls along its ridges and valleys, from the Sault plateau to the Toulourenc valley, from the rolling hills of Vaison-la-Romaine to the Monts de Vaucluse.

The diverse topography of this region offers inspiring scenary: rugged high plateaux, dramatic cliffs, verdant valleys, and gentle hills. Wild flora flourishes in this medley of Mediterranean warmth and mountainous coolness. From fragrant garrigue and ancient oak groves to delicate orchids and alpine blooms, nature paints a vivid picture at every turn.

Since 2020, the natural and cultural treasures of Ventoux have been safeguarded as part of the Mont Ventoux Regional Natural Park. This designation complements its recognition as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, awarded in 1990, further emphasising the mountain’s significance as a sanctuary of biodiversity and natural heritage.

A tapestry of agriculture at Ventoux’s feet

At the base of Mont Ventoux, cultivated fields spread out like a colourful quilt, stretching from the lower slopes of the Ventoux to the valleys below and blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Golden grains, particularly ancient petit épeautre, wave in the breeze alongside rows of lavender, cherry orchards, almond trees, and olive groves, each marking the passing seasons with their vibrant hues. The vineyards of the Vaucluse are especially prominent, with grapevines stretching across the foothills, from the Carpentras basin to Malaucène and the Monts de Vaucluse. Here, the fertile soils and idyllic climate create the perfect conditions for winemaking. These vines yield exceptional grapes, transformed with care and artistry by local vintners into celebrated wines.

Among the treasures of the AOC Ventoux appellation are the renowned crus of Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, and Gigondas.
