Visiting Mont Ventoux: everything you need to know

The sweeping views of Provence from Mont Ventoux draw thousands of visitors each year. Rising to 1910 metres, its iconic white summit—the highest in the Vaucluse—is a beacon for nature lovers, adventurers, and those chasing the thrill of awe-inspiring panoramas. Whether you’re a dedicated cyclist, an avid hiker, or an intrepid traveller, Mont Ventoux offers an experience like no other. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your visit to this legendary destination in France.

Which route to take to reach Mont Ventoux?

Three scenic routes to Mont Ventoux by car

Mont Ventoux is accessible via three main routes, each with its own unique charm and diverse experiences:

  • From Bédoin: Known as the ultimate climb, this legendary and challenging route is favoured by Tour de France cyclists. This ascent from the southern side winds through lush oak and pine forests, passes the iconic Chalet Reynard, and culminates in the moonlike landscapes of the summit.
  • From Malaucène: A less-travelled but equally spectacular road. This route from the northern side meanders through picturesque scenery and passes the Mont Serein resort.
  • From Sault: The longest but gentlest climb, ideal for a more leisurely journey. Starting in lavender fields, this route climbs steadily through wooded slopes before emerging into the rocky terrain of Mont Ventoux’s upper reaches.

When are the roads to Mont Ventoux open?

The summit of Mont Ventoux is accessible from mid-April from Chalet Reynard, departing from Bédoin and Sault. Access via the Mont Serein resort, via Malaucène, is possible from mid-May. Route opening dates are confirmed each year by local tourist offices.

From spring to autumn, Mont Ventoux hosts various sporting events such as cycling races, running competitions, and rallies. These can lead to temporary road closures, so check in advance to avoid any inconvenience.

Where to park when visiting Mont Ventoux ?

Mont Ventoux is well-equipped for visitors, with parking available at key points:

  • Along the D974 at the summit, accessible from Bédoin on the southern side
  • Parking Sud « Tempête » (South), also accessible from Bédoin
  • Parking Nord « Radôme » (North), accessible from Malaucène
